A-Level curriculum and subject syllabuses

The A-Level curriculum and subject syllabuses are designed to develop the values, skills and dispositions that students would need to take them through life as responsible adults and active citizens.

Overview

The A-Level curriculum focuses on 3 areas, namely Life skills, Knowledge skills and Subject disciplines.

Life skills

Life skills ensure that students develop sound values, skills and dispositions to take them through life as responsible adults and citizens. It comprises the non-academic curriculum, for example:

  • Character and Citizenship Education, including Key Student Development Experiences such as:
    • Co-Curricular Activities
    • Values in Action
    • Student Leadership Development programmes
  • Physical Education
Knowledge skills

Knowledge skills seek to develop students’ thinking, process and communication skills. This will enable students to analyse information and express their thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively. It comprises skills-based subjects, such as:

  • General Paper
  • Knowledge and Inquiry
  • Project Work
Subject disciplines

Subject disciplines ensure that students have a good grounding across different areas of study. It comprises subjects in the Languages, Humanities and the Arts, and Mathematics and Sciences domains. Some examples of subjects in each domain are:

Subjects requirements and programmes

Students must meet specific requirements to take certain subjects.

There are also programmes offered in junior colleges (JC) and Millennia Institute (MI) to further develop students' strengths and areas of interest. Scholarships may be offered to students pursuing specific programmes.

From 2028, students who are posted to JC or MI will offer either H1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL) or MTL 'B' depending on the subjects taken at the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations.

If you have taken G3 MTL and scored A1 to D7

You will offer H1 MTL.

If you have taken G2 MTL and scored Grade 1 to 5

You will offer MTL ‘B’.

If you scored Grade 1 or 2 for the subject at the SEC examinations, you may choose to offer H1 MTL.

If you have taken G1 MTL and scored A to D

You will be offered MTL ‘B’.
